When I run cisl-irving: TRAMP uses “ls” when it establishes the connection, and won’t handle colors in the output of aqusmacs. It’s installed via what Reitter calls a “point-and-click installer”.

The Emacs for the Mac

A community around Aquamacs and a larger one around Emacs! By default, Aquamacs uses Lucida-Grande as the default font for all modes, including programming languages. There is a documented way to make our own theme, but it fails for me – the resulting file which I named “Petes-color-theme” causes errors in Aquamacs.

Experiment, changing one face color at a time aquakacs restarting Aquamacs to see the results. Aquamacs additionally activates a number of aquuamacs that are provided with the default emacs, such as cua-base, ibuffer, recentf.

You can use info mode to read an info file that isn’t installed in the standard place.

Aquamacs (Pete’s notes)

When you’re messing with keyboards, you sometimes want to see what character Emacs sees when you hit a given key. I couldn’t figure out a way to replace these characters with an interactive command, so I made my personal “cleanup” function replace the characters with true spaces.

Suppose you have a file named emacs-lisp-intro. Mxnual the file and change all occurrences of “my-color-theme” to “Petes-color-theme”.

Use the command “ssh-add -D”. But if I did, you do it by gotting in the mode, then: Aquuamacs you have to deal with getting tidy to do what you want.

Aquamacs can organize the files that you’re editing in tabs. Aquamacs creates files named “. This happened because you don’t have an external Lisp installed – it tried “lisp” and failed.

No installation, no setup needed.

Like the little window that pops up when you run ediff. Look it up with C-H V and follow the “customize” link.

The file will look fine when displayed with a “more” or “cat” command, but when you look at it with Aquamacs, some of the space characters will show up as blue underscores. For example, you can easily distinguish LaTeX files on the screen by their beige background color, or use variable-width proportional fonts for text modes only, but stick to fixed width, monospaced fonts for editing code. You can define fonts and colors as defaults for a given editing mode. To see the last characters, use C-h l.

This section describes setting the colors of the foreground. I just want to evaluate little snippets of Lisp code. On the remote system, I have to disable color highlighting in the “ls” command. To change the coding system, use C-x RET f or set-buffer-file-coding-system and set it to “unix”. Here are some features that Aquamacs has to offer on top of all the advantages that come with Emacs:.

Then you can use the weird syntax see next paragraph to open the file. You get a menu with recently edited files without any configuration. If Aquamacs starts and goes “beep”, and won’t open windows, and when you click on its icon it goes “beep” and does nothing, it’s because you have a junk frame-positions file. Emacs shares the colors of things that are common across programming languages. It looks terrible in a proportional font.

When you double-click a file written in Aquamacs, it’ll open in Aquamacs. Trouble is, it didn’t work. To install gtypist-mode, I. Sometimes you’ll want to explicitly change the coding style that Emacs uses when writing a file.

I didn’t like html-helper-mode at first, but I’m stuck with it. The Mac-standard font Lucida Grande is the default for editing text, and the mono-spaced Monaco is used to other modes. This is where I put stuff that I want in both Aquamacs and in regular emacs on Linux hosts. Aquamacs spell-checks your documents with the OS X spell-checker, supporting more than a hundred languages and system-wide user dictionaries.

When I did this, I got an error, and Aquamacs was henceforth broken. See Vagmi’s blog about it. A faster way is to use the face-list. Aquamacs can open a normal OS X window for each file that maunal opened – Emacs experts call such windows frames. Then I downloaded the full Aquamacs manhal with this command: That means that you can have customized designs for different types of files you’re editing. This sucks for programming languages, obviously.

Later, when the file is written, Emacs converts its internal representation back to the one it detected when the file was opened. Click on the little oval at the upper-right part of the window. You can individually set each mode’s font, but there are some you can’t set. That’s fine if you want to edit the manual, but to process it into anything, you need to have LaTeX.

If you were using multiple displays, and had windows spread around, and now you only have one display, Aquamacs gets confused. If you have shared files sitting on a Unix server like netserverand you share them using smbd SAMBAand you mount them on a Mac and then try to edit the remote files using Aquamacs, you may run into a problem with lock files.
